Why use and eye balm?

Your eyes are the focal point of your face, and while we routinely strive for the perfect eyebrows, the best lashes, or latest make-up trends we often neglect the basics in good eye skincare.

The skin around our eyes is very delicate and the first place to show signs of ageing.  It needs targeted care because:

  • It’s about 10 times thinner than the skin on the rest of your face
  • It has fewer sebum producing glands that naturally moisturise skin
  • This area is working constantly, with over 10,000 movements per day with blinking alone

Combine this with natural collagen breakdown, sun exposure and squinting, and it’s no surprise most of us experience wrinkles, dark circles and puffiness.

Eye skincare at all ages

It’s never too soon or too late to start an eye skincare routine.  Issues like dryness, flakiness and dark circles aren’t always age related. Whether you’re 21, and it’s due to late nights studying /partying or ‘laugh lines’ are becoming more prominent there are ways to pamper and smooth your eye area.

Not all moisturisers are OK for eye area

Your eyes need a treatment specifically designed for this sensitive area. It’s not OK to spread your regular moisturiser a little further. It’s usually a heavier formula created for face and neck and can actually make things worse, resulting in clogged pores and puffy eyes.

What to look for in an eye cream

Look for extremely gentle, non-irritating ingredients. A formula made specifically for eye skincare that promotes collagen and reduces the appearance of wrinkles will make eyes look fresh and plump.  There are many great all natural antioxidants and moisturisers, like Cucumber oil, Green Tea extract, Vitamin E, Papaya and Guava extract, without having to resort to harsh chemicals to soothe and exfoliate.

Here’s your naturally beautiful eye skincare routine

  1. Remove make-up or cleanse very gently. No rough washing, rubbing or pulling skin around your eyes. Use gentle cotton wool pads, not a harsh face cloth.
  1. Use your special eye cream sparingly – using too much won’t improve results. Apply it by patting gently around the eye socket.

For the very best results:

  • Wear sunglasses everyday to prevent squinting
  • Avoid too many salty foods as this can lead to fluid retention and puffy eyes
  • Get plenty of sleep
  • Highly perfumed detergents and fabric softeners on pillowcases can sometime irritate very sensitive eye skin
  • Clean your make-up brushes regularly
  • Throw-away very old or contaminated make-up products
